RCW overcomes a slow start

Dec 6—RENVILLE — Renville County West brushed off a slow start in the first half en route to a 56-45 victory over the Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks on Monday.

The Jaguars made their first basket 4 minutes, 10 seconds into the game.

Once the first one fell, RCW quickly found its footing to take a 32-19 halftime lead.

“I don’t know what I have to do differently to get our girls going,” RCW head coach Derik Johnson said. “We’re just a slow-starting team. We need someone to give us a spark. I thought Johanna (Braun) and Holly (Hinderks) gave us that spark.”

Junior forward Rachel Jakel led RCW. She recorded 17 points, led the Jaguars with 12 rebounds, and tallied two blocks.

Hinderks, a freshman guard, had 16 points and sophomore center Avery Roxberg had 10.

Hinderks led RCW with three three-pointers and tied Braun, who had seven points, with a team-best five steals. Roxberg also tied Jakel with a team-high two blocks.

“That was a fun game. It was competitive,” Johnson said. “I thought our girls hung in there. Give it to Dawson-Boyd. I think they gave us some competition that we sorely needed, so it was a good game for us.”

Senior forward Kate Dahl led the Blackjacks with a game-high 19 points. She also led DB with 10 rebounds and two blocks. Junior guard Allison Estling had 13 points with a team-best five steals.

“I think they felt a little more relaxed,” Johnson said of his 2-1 Jaguars. “We are having more fun, they’re enjoying it more. … That’s what I’m impressed with most, them enjoying the competition and the ups and downs that come with it.”

Dawson-Boyd’s next game is against Lac qui Parle Valley at 6 pm Thursday at Dawson. RCW plays at 7:30 pm Thursday against MACCRAY in Clara City.

“I want to see our girls just play with fluidity and know what to do and compete,” Johnson said. “I want to see more maturity and basketball IQ, whether we win or lose.”
